What's this about?
Willison diffed the published Fable 5.1 system prompt against Fable 5's. His summary: it is mostly about not reproducing song lyrics and avoiding drawing copyrighted characters.
Why does the published system prompt matter?
Because it is the closest thing to a specification of the product's behaviour, and Anthropic publishes it — which most labs do not. Reading the diff between versions tells you what the company decided to change about how the model behaves, and the changes are usually driven by something specific: a legal exposure, a pattern of complaints, or an incident. Song lyrics and copyrighted characters are both squarely legal.
Why is it worth noticing?

- A capability release whose behavioural diff is entirely about copyright is a useful reminder of what actually constrains these products.
- Publishing the system prompt at all is a transparency practice worth naming, since it makes exactly this analysis possible.
- Willison has diffed every version for years, which makes the series more informative than any single entry.
