What's this about?
Chinese-language X users worked through the arithmetic on Claude's Max plans and concluded that the advertised "20×" applies to the five-hour session window, not to overall capacity. The weekly ceiling on the $200 plan works out to roughly twice the $100 plan rather than the four times the labels imply. As one poster put it: this has been live for a year and programmers, supposedly the people best at arithmetic, are only noticing now.
What is a "session window" versus a weekly limit?
Two separate meters. The five-hour window caps how hard you can push in one sitting — it is what stops a single runaway agent loop. The weekly limit caps your total. A plan can multiply the first by 20 while multiplying the second by 2, and both numbers are true. Which one you feel depends entirely on your usage shape: bursty users hit the window, steady heavy users hit the week. The marketing quotes the number that flatters the plan.
What's the community saying?
- The HN thread is mostly about wording. Anthropic's own announcement says the changes "will make it feel like you're getting more from Claude", and commenters zero in on *feel*.
- "There's a difference between making you feel and actually improving something" is the sentence that gets repeated.
- The arithmetic that irritates people: from today's temporary elevated level, the announced permanent increase is actually a 17% reduction.
- A commercially-minded aside gets traction — the improvement people actually want is being allowed to use a Claude Code subscription from third-party harnesses.
- oran_ge's parting shot: the good news is this fooled OpenAI too, and Codex's 20× is a real 20×.
