What's this about?
Less than 200 days after launch, ChatGPT Ads is at a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, used by tens of thousands of advertisers. From today advertisers can buy directly through Ads Manager across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. OpenAI frames advertising as one pillar of a diversified model alongside subscriptions, enterprise and API usage — the pillar that funds a free tier for more than a billion weekly active users.
What is an "annualized revenue run rate"?
Take the most recent period's revenue and multiply it out to a year. It is not a year's revenue; it is a snapshot projected forward, which flatters anything growing fast and says nothing about whether the rate holds. It is the standard way a young business line reports, and worth reading as "we are currently earning at this pace" rather than "we earned this."
What's the community saying?
- The near-silence is itself the finding. Advertising inside a chat assistant was a major point of principle two years ago and is now a business update.
- OpenAI's stated safeguards are specific: ads are labelled and separate from answers, advertising does not influence the answers, advertisers get no access to private conversations, and personalisation is user-controllable.
- The part worth watching is scoped carefully in their own words — the system uses the current conversation's context, and "depending on the country and a user's settings" may also use context from the user's broader ChatGPT experience.
- It lands the same week ChatGPT was designated under the EU's strictest online safety rules, which is the regime that will test those claims.
