How ChatGPT Ads works

What's this about?

The stated mechanics, which are worth recording precisely. Ads are always clearly labelled and separate from ChatGPT's answers. Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Advertisers do not receive access to people's private conversations. Users can control how their ad experience is personalised. The system uses the context of the current conversation to select an ad, and — "depending on the country and a user's settings" — may also use context from the user's broader ChatGPT experience.

What is the actual privacy question here?

Not whether advertisers see your conversations; OpenAI says they don't and that is checkable in principle. The question is what the *ad system* sees. Selecting a relevant ad from conversational context means something reads that context and derives interests from it. "Advertisers don't get your conversations" and "your conversations determine which advertiser reaches you" are both true simultaneously, and only the second describes what is happening to your data.

Why is it worth noticing?

  1. OpenAI's framing puts advertising alongside subscriptions, enterprise and API as a business pillar — that is a settled strategic position, not an experiment.
  2. The free tier for over a billion weekly users is the justification, and it is a real one.
  3. "Depending on the country" acknowledges that what is permitted varies by jurisdiction, which is the honest way to say it.
