What's this about?
Claude Science used Fable 5.1 to compute a six-particle amplitude in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills at nine loops, following two known routes. Physicist Lance Dixon independently checked the result.
What exactly is a loop calculation?
Particle physicists approximate interactions by adding layers of possible quantum effects. Each extra “loop” makes the formula much more accurate and vastly harder to compute—like expanding a Sudoku where every new layer multiplies the constraints.
Why does this matter?
primary Anthropic guest post with independent expert validation; no broad discussion sample was captured.
- Claude ran largely unattended, receiving instructions such as “keep working” while organising code and 96 CPUs for a week.
- It used established physics techniques rather than discovering a new principle; the theory is a useful toy model, not a direct model of nature.
- A human team using some GPT-6 assistance reached a concurrent result, narrowing the claim from unique discovery to unusually autonomous execution.
