Immich and SteamDB

What's this about?

A writeup on replacing Google Photos with self-hosted Immich, and news that SteamDB has joined Nexus Mods.

Why does self-hosted photo storage keep coming back?

Because photos are the highest-emotional-value data most people have and the least portable. Google Photos is genuinely excellent and the lock-in is severe: search, face grouping and sharing all live in the service, and the storage bill only goes up. Immich is the open-source project that got close enough on the features people actually use — and the enabling change is that the ML for face and object recognition now runs acceptably on hardware you own.

Why is it worth noticing?

Immich 98 points, SteamDB 102 points
  1. Both are consolidation stories in the same direction: keep the thing rather than rent it.
  2. SteamDB joining Nexus Mods keeps a valuable independent database under community rather than platform ownership.
  3. Grouped because the interest is in the pattern more than either project.
