The announcement that 404'd

What's this about?

Partway through the HN thread the Gemini 3.8 announcement and its model card started returning 404. Commenters archived both the page and the PDF card. It is live again now.

Why does a page like this disappear?

Usually a publication-timing mistake — a post going live ahead of a coordinated launch and being pulled, or a CDN cache purge racing a routing change. It is rarely sinister and it is always revealing, because the internal schedule leaks through the outage. The community's reflex — archive first, discuss second — is the correct one and increasingly necessary.

What's the community saying?

HN 846 points, 493 comments
  1. "It's 404 now." / "Came and went in a flash." / "Because they are preparing Gemini 3.9 Flash."
  2. The line that got the most appreciation: "The real singularity is when new models are released faster than we can change the model dropdown dialog."
  3. Someone noted the blog post was gone while the model itself was already usable in the Gemini chat interface, which is its own comment on release coordination.
  4. Two archive links were posted within minutes, which is why anyone can still read what it said.
