Claude Commerce Agents, open-sourced

What's this about?

Anthropic is open-sourcing Claude Commerce Agents: a blueprint for building shopping and merchant agents, with reference implementations across retail, travel, telecom and entertainment.

Why open-source a commerce blueprint?

Because the constraint on agentic shopping is not model capability, it is that nobody has agreed how the transaction works. Who authenticates, who holds the payment credential, what the merchant sees, how a return is handled, who is liable when the agent buys the wrong thing. A reference implementation is an attempt to make one set of answers the default by being the thing everyone forks — the same play as MCP, applied to commerce.

Why is it worth noticing?

  1. It follows research from last week finding agent purchasing decisions are not reliably predictable or influenceable, which is the open problem underneath this.
  2. Four verticals with working implementations is a substantial artifact, not a spec.
  3. Whoever's blueprint wins here shapes how a large amount of money moves later.
