60% fewer false positives

What's this about?

Anthropic's newest safeguards block 60% fewer false positives than before in cybersecurity — benign content that the system previously flagged. The stated reason is partly that Fable 5.1 is now permitted to discover vulnerabilities at all.

Why do false positives matter as much as false negatives?

Because a security tool that refuses legitimate work does not get used. Every practitioner who has had a model decline to analyse a crash dump, explain a CVE or read a piece of malware knows the failure: the refusal is not protecting anyone, since the information is public and the analyst is doing defensive work, and the practical result is that they switch to a model that will help. Over-refusal does not reduce harm; it reduces market share among exactly the population you want using your tool defensively.

Why does this matter to you?

  1. This is the single most directly useful change in the announcement for anyone doing security work with these models.
  2. A 60% reduction is large enough to change whether a workflow is viable, not just less annoying.
  3. It is measured against their own prior baseline, which is the only comparison available but not an absolute one.
