CogEvol generates the learning environments

What's this about?

Efficient and reliable generation of learning environments — the settings agents train in, rather than the agents. 26 upvotes.

Why generate environments rather than tasks?

Because an environment is where the difficulty actually lives. A task is a goal; an environment is the world that makes achieving it hard — the tools available, what breaks, what information is hidden, what the consequences of a wrong move are. You can write a thousand task descriptions against one environment and the agent learns one environment. Generating environments is how you get variety that generalises, and it is much harder because an environment has to be internally consistent and actually solvable.

Why does this matter to you?

  1. "Reliable" is the operative word — a generated environment that is subtly impossible teaches the agent that confident action produces failure, or worse, teaches it to cheat.
  2. This is the supply side of the reward-hacking problem Anthropic published on this week: hackable environments produce reward hackers.
  3. It sits alongside the agentic-game-development paper from last week as two routes to the same bottleneck.
