What's this about?
Simon Willison noticed the ChatGPT desktop app — previously named Codex — ships a complete copy of the LibreOffice open-source office suite, tucked into a hidden folder in `~/.cache`.
Why would a chat app need an office suite?
To read and write Office documents. Parsing and rendering `.docx`, `.xlsx` and `.pptx` faithfully is a famously miserable problem — the formats are enormous, the specification is long, and the only implementation that handles real-world files reliably is LibreOffice itself. Bundling it is heavy and inelegant and appears to be the pragmatic answer: several commenters who tried the alternatives report arriving at the same conclusion after months.

- The immediate diagnosis: this is what it uses to render and manipulate Office documents, which would explain the poor rendering of some files.
- The pushback — why not use computer use, or the CLIs the major office suites now ship? — gets a practical rebuttal: computer use is slow, steals window focus, and interrupts you while the agent works in the background.
- The most credible comment comes from someone who built the same thing: they spent an enormous amount of time trying everything else, and LibreOffice was the only thing even somewhat functional. "Easily 2 months of my life."
- Apache POI gets named as the alternative library, without much enthusiasm.
