The biology access programme

What's this about?

Anthropic has established an access programme, developed in partnership with the US government, to enable access to Mythos 5.1's advanced biology capabilities, with enrolment for scientists opening soon.

Why does biology need a separate programme from cybersecurity?

Because the risk profile is different in a specific way: a cyberattack is recoverable and a pathogen is not. Both domains need capable models for defensive work — vaccine design, threat characterisation — and both have a misuse path. But the biology path has no patch, which is why bio capabilities have been the most conservatively gated of any category, and why the access programme involves the government rather than being an internal decision.

Why is it worth noticing?

  1. Government partnership on the access list is a governance structure, not just a capability announcement.
  2. It is the same architecture as everything else today: capability trained once, access tiered by vetting.
  3. "Enrolment opening soon" means this is announced rather than operating.
