The weekly limit is a 17% cut from today

What's this about?

Anthropic announced a permanent 25% increase to standard weekly limits from September 14, with the current temporary 50% increase running until then. HN did the subtraction: relative to what you have today, the permanent level is about 17% lower. The framing that drew fire is Anthropic's own wording — the changes "will make it feel like you're getting more from Claude."

Why is "feel" the word people caught?

Because it is doing precise work. A claim that you *are* getting more is falsifiable; a claim that it will *feel* like more is not. The charitable reading is that efficiency improvements mean the same allowance goes further, which is genuinely true and was the substance of OpenAI's Codex fixes the same week. The uncharitable reading is that a reduction is being announced in language chosen so most readers won't perform the comparison.

  1. "There's a difference between making you feel and actually improving something. The word choice is definitely suspicious."
  2. A defence that the six words before it — "we're working on exciting changes that" — supply context the headline drops.
  3. The wish that keeps recurring in these threads: let people use a Claude Code subscription from third-party harnesses with no strings attached.
  4. Read with the "20×" arithmetic elsewhere in today's digest — both are about the gap between how capacity is marketed and how it is metered.
