What's this about?
A pull request to uv, the Rust Python package manager, deduplicating every file in the wheel cache.
What is a wheel cache and why does it duplicate?
A wheel is a pre-built Python package archive. uv unpacks them into a cache so installs become file links rather than downloads. The duplication is that many versions of many packages contain byte-identical files — the same vendored dependency, the same license text, the same unchanged module across a dozen point releases. Store each version separately and you keep thousands of copies of identical content. Deduplicating by content hash collapses them, which matters most in CI, where every job materialises the same cache.
Why is it worth noticing?

- Disk is cheap until it is a CI runner you pay for by the minute, at which point cache size is wall-clock time.
- It rhymes with the Cloudflare DNS cache story from last week: 2026 has the industry paying attention to storage and memory again because they got expensive.
- Astral's releases reliably draw this kind of attention, which is itself a signal about how much of the Python ecosystem now runs on their tooling.
