What's this about?
A project that reached 506 points and 186 comments on the day. The name and the timing place it in Burning Man territory — playa being the desert the event is held on.
Why do these projects resonate here?
Because a phone system built for a place with no infrastructure is the purest form of the hobby: you cannot buy the solution, the constraints are physical, and it either works in the dust or it doesn't. It is the same appeal as mesh networking and off-grid radio, with a deadline.
Why is it worth noticing?

- It was the day's third-highest thread, and non-AI — worth noting given how much of this digest is not.
- The event context also explains the timing, with Burning Man having just concluded.
- Included for the record of what the community engaged with, rather than for technical depth this digest can vouch for.
