What's this about?
Mollick: "Kind of surprised that we are not seeing more radical political ideas built around AI capabilities, the way that early mass industrialization was a prime motivator in the conceptions of capitalism, communism, and socialism."
Why did industrialization produce ideologies?
Because it broke the existing explanation of how the world worked. When production moved from households to factories, the received account of who owns what, who works for whom and what a person is owed stopped describing reality — so people built new accounts, and those accounts became movements with programmes. The observation here is that AI is producing anxiety, commentary and regulation, but not a comparable structural theory of what should replace the arrangement it is dissolving.

- One reading is that it is early: industrial ideologies took decades and the factory system was visible in a way inference is not.
- Another is that the existing frames have absorbed it — every faction reads AI as confirmation of what it already believed.
- The uncomfortable third possibility the post leaves open: the absence is itself the effect, if the technology also erodes the collective capacity to formulate a programme.
