StemDeck, TurboKV and vLLM v0.28.0

What's this about?

StemDeck is a free, open-source, entirely local AI stem separator — it takes a finished song and splits it back into vocals, drums, bass and other parts, on your own machine with nothing uploaded.

What is stem separation?

Undoing a mix. A recorded track is many instruments summed into two channels; separating them means inferring what each source was from the sum, which is mathematically underdetermined and was considered impractical until neural approaches got good at it. It is now good enough for remixing, practice, karaoke and sampling — and the local-only property matters, because the alternative is uploading music you may not own to someone else's server.

Why is it worth noticing?

  1. "Free, open-source and local" is the whole pitch, and increasingly rare in the audio-AI space.
  2. It belongs to the same category as the small-models argument from earlier in the week: capable enough, cheap enough, and runs where your data already is.
  3. Grouped in the digest with TurboKV and vLLM v0.28.0 as the week's other infrastructure releases.
