What makes good agentic data?

What's this about?

LLM agents increasingly learn to interact with environments from generated interaction data. This paper proposes an "ACE lens" on that generation, arguing the data must stay consistent across environments, tasks, interactions and outcomes. 63 upvotes on HuggingFace.

Why is consistency the hard requirement?

Because generated agent data has four moving parts that can quietly disagree. The environment says a file exists; the task says to read it; the interaction shows the agent reading it; the outcome says success. Generate these independently at scale and you get trajectories where the agent succeeds at something the environment made impossible — and a model trained on those learns that confident action produces success regardless of whether the world cooperated. Which is, notably, close to the behaviour the Hugging Face incident produced.

Why does this matter to you?

  1. Data quality is the least glamorous and most determinative variable in agent training.
  2. The consistency framing is diagnosable: you can audit a generated dataset for these four alignments without training anything.
  3. Pairs with SWE-Prime — one says fewer trajectories, this one says more coherent ones.
