Anthropic replies within two hours

What's this about?

Under two hours after OpenAI's announcement, Anthropic co-founder and Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown posted: "Cursor has been a trusted partner of Anthropic since Sonnet 3.5. We'll continue to increase compute to support Claude models in Cursor and are excited for what comes next with them at SpaceX." An Anthropic engineer followed with his own note of respect for the Cursor team.

Why is "Chief Compute Officer" the relevant title here?

Because the promise being made is about GPUs, not goodwill. Serving a model to a partner at Cursor's volume means allocating a large slice of finite inference capacity — the scarcest resource any lab has. A statement from the person who decides where that capacity goes is a commitment; the same words from a communications team would be a press release.

  1. The most-repeated observation, from Chinese-language commentators in particular: Anthropic and OpenAI appear to have swapped positions on openness.
  2. The timing reads as deliberate — same-day, before the news cycle settled, and phrased warmly toward SpaceX rather than pointedly at OpenAI.
  3. It reframes the story from "OpenAI punishes Musk" to "Cursor's users have somewhere to go", which is the more useful framing for anyone who actually uses the product.
