What's this about?
Stripe's CEO said companies selling tokens are facing massive amounts of fraud, and that Stripe Radar is getting very good at blocking it. Within hours an Anthropic engineer confirmed the same thing from the other side: several of their customers are being targeted, and these attacks damage everyone's ability to serve legitimate users.
What exactly is "token fraud"?
Buy inference credits with a stolen card, resell the access, and disappear before the chargeback lands. AI inference is close to the perfect target — instantly deliverable, globally resellable, no shipping address, and expensive enough per unit to be worth stealing. The cost falls on the provider twice: the compute is already burned, and the payment is reversed.

- The notable thing is the corroboration — a payments CEO and a model provider independently describing the same pressure on the same day.
- The consequence Anthropic names is the one users feel: fraud is part of why legitimate customers face tighter limits and more verification.
- It connects to the week's pricing story — when frontier tokens are expensive, stealing them becomes a business.
