What's this about?
OpenAI published another takedown report, this one covering a new covert influence operation originating from Russia, with detail on the accounts and the content they were generating.
What exactly is a "covert influence operation"?
Fake personas at scale, posting content designed to look like ordinary opinion, in order to shift what appears to be public consensus. Generative models made the expensive part — producing plausible, varied text in a target language — nearly free, so the bottleneck moved to distribution and account creation.

- The most-replied question is why a Russian operation would route through Israel-linked infrastructure for credibility, which readers found strange.
- Asked repeatedly: why use a monitored commercial API at all instead of running open-weight models locally, where no takedown report is possible?
- A widely-supported call for a public registry of *all* covert influence campaigns, explicitly including those run by one's own government.
- A native speaker picks apart the generated text's quality, noting an odd word choice and wondering whether it is a model failure or an operator error.
