Don't paste the AI, please

What's this about?

A single-page site asking people to stop pasting chatbot output into replies. Its core argument: "When someone asks you something, they want your answer. Not a wall of ChatGPT text. A short answer from a human will always be worth more than one from a robot, even if the robot is right." And the observation underneath it — the person you're replying to has the same tools you do, so if they wanted the generic answer they'd already have it. They asked you.

What exactly is the social violation here?

Asking someone a question is a small claim on their attention and judgment, and answering is how you honour it. Pasting a model's answer returns something that looks like a response but contains none of what was asked for — no judgment about their specific situation, no signal about what you'd actually do. It's closer to forwarding a search result than to answering. The reason it stings more than a bad answer is that it's a defection disguised as helpfulness: you got the credit for responding without doing the thing that made responding valuable.

  1. The top comments all say the page reads as AI-written, which is either fatal irony or an accidental demonstration of how hard the tone is to escape.
  2. "Genuinely useful" was flagged as a strong Claude indicator — a small, specific piece of forensic folk-knowledge that has clearly been accumulating.
  3. The best serious objection: what if English isn't your first language and you're afraid of sounding silly? The norm as stated penalizes non-native speakers using a tool for exactly what it's good at.
  4. "It's the modern era lmgtfy" — the closest historical analogue, and a reminder that this genre of scolding is not new.
  5. A rival, shorter site was posted and several preferred it, on the grounds that a page complaining about AI verbosity should itself be short.
