OpenRouter is joining Stripe

What's this about?

The acquisition Bloomberg reported earlier this week is now confirmed by OpenRouter itself, and the announcement supplies the numbers that make a $7 billion price comprehensible. OpenRouter processes more than 10 trillion tokens per day across 400+ AI models, serving over 10 million developers and companies, and says it has seen at least 10x growth in inference volume every year since founding. The team is 90 people.

What exactly is a "model gateway"?

Every AI provider has its own API, pricing and quirks. A gateway sits in front of all of them: you integrate once, and it routes each request to whichever model you chose, handling billing, failover and observability. The practical value is that switching models becomes a configuration change rather than an engineering project. The strategic value — and the reason for the price — is positional: a gateway at this volume sees which model developers actually pick for which job, how often they switch, and what each one returns. That is a market-wide view no individual lab has of its competitors.

  1. "Could someone explain why these routers are so valuable?" Still the thread's central question, and the recurring answer is that the routing data — real production traffic labelled by developer choice — is worth more than the routing service.
  2. "Middleman company buying middleman company. Makes sense." The most-upvoted joke, and not an unfair description of Stripe acquiring a payments-shaped layer for inference.
  3. The corporate-speak backlash. "Joining forces with Stripe to power the next wave of GDP growth globally" got singled out as meaningless, which is a fair reading of an otherwise informative post.
  4. A WhatsApp comparison, meant kindly. OpenRouter's promise to "preserve the velocity, agility and talent density of the 90-person startup that we are today" struck several as an echo of acquisitions past — with the implied outcome left unstated.
  5. Genuine credit for the product. Multiple commenters volunteered that OpenRouter's developer experience is excellent, and that whatever you think of the price, the thing works.
