ColaMD 1.9.0

What's this about?

OrangeAI shipped ColaMD 1.9.0, addressing two specific frustrations. First, exporting straight to .docx — headings, lists, code blocks and images all carry across — so you can hand a Markdown document to colleagues who work in Word. Second, exporting to image, with automatic slicing for long documents, so notes can be posted into WeChat groups and social platforms where Markdown doesn't render. The release also improves PDF export to follow your current theme with no white margins, and adds an outline mode for navigating long documents.

What exactly is the problem being solved?

Markdown is excellent for writing and terrible for distribution. It renders properly only where someone built a renderer, so the moment your document leaves your editor it becomes either raw symbols or something you must convert. In Chinese working contexts this bites harder than elsewhere: Word remains the document standard in most organizations, and WeChat — where a great deal of professional communication happens — has no Markdown rendering at all, which is why "export as image" is a genuine feature rather than a curiosity.

Why is this worth noticing?

  1. It's a good example of localization as product work rather than translation — image export exists because of how WeChat actually gets used, not because of a general theory of documents.
  2. It's an independent developer shipping steadily in a week dominated by billion-dollar acquisitions, and a reminder that most useful software is still small.
