What's this about?
Ed Zitron's counterfactual asking what would unwind if OpenAI failed — landing the same week as Anthropic's IPO reporting, Nvidia's reduced infrastructure backstop, and the Norway proposal.
What exactly would be at stake?
The interesting part isn't the company but the dependencies. OpenAI is a major purchaser of compute underwriting data center construction; a large number of startups are built directly on its API; and its valuation anchors comparables for the entire sector. So the question isn't whether the technology survives — it obviously would — but whether the financing structure does, since a great deal of infrastructure spending is justified by projected demand that OpenAI represents a large share of.
Why is this worth noticing?

- It's part of a visible shift this month from "how fast will AI progress" to "what is holding up the capital structure," alongside the Nvidia backstop reduction and the memory-price thread's economics question.
- Zitron is a committed skeptic and the piece reads that way, which is worth knowing — but the dependency map it draws is checkable independently of the conclusion.
