GLM-5.3 benchmarks

What's this about?

Independent benchmark results for Zhipu's GLM-5.3 landed on Artificial Analysis. The context that makes them interesting: GLM-5.3 uses the same 756-billion-parameter base model as GLM-5.2, so its entire capability improvement came from post-training.

What exactly does an independent leaderboard add?

Every lab publishes benchmarks with its release, and every lab chooses which benchmarks and which comparison models. That isn't necessarily dishonest, but it's selective. A third party running a fixed suite across all models on the same harness gives you comparability — the ability to say model A beats model B on the same test under the same conditions. It's why the Artificial Analysis index gets cited more than any lab's own charts, and why a model appearing there is a different kind of evidence than its launch post.

Why is this worth noticing?

  1. It puts a number on the post-training claim that circulated when GLM-5.3 launched — that capability gains no longer require retraining from scratch, which lowers the barrier to competing substantially.
  2. It arrives in a week where the post-training thesis got support from an unexpected direction: StateM showed large gains from changing only the harness, with model weights frozen. Both point at the same conclusion — the model is no longer the only lever.
