Alibaba's Qwen 3.8 family includes a 27-billion-parameter model that runs locally: a 17GB file in LM Studio on a MacBook. Simon Willison, who tests every model by asking it to draw a pelican riding a bicycle in SVG, said it produced the best pelican he's seen from anything running on his laptop, and that he can't remember the last time he had this much fun with a local model. One quirk he noted and came to enjoy: at LM Studio's default "extra high" reasoning setting it is a chronic over-thinker.
What exactly is a GGUF, and why does the size matter?
GGUF is the file format for running language models on ordinary hardware, and the number attached to it is what determines whether you can. A model's weights are normally stored at high precision, which is accurate and enormous. Quantization stores them more coarsely — fewer bits per weight — shrinking the file several-fold for a modest quality loss. 17GB matters because it fits in the memory of a laptop people already own. That's the line between "a model exists" and "you can run it on the train."

- The pelican benchmark did its job again. Willison's deliberately silly, uncontaminated test — draw a pelican riding a bicycle in SVG — is valued precisely because no lab optimizes for it.
