Cursor cloud agents start 3x faster

What's this about?

Cursor made its cloud agents start three times faster, so users can hand them ambitious long-running tasks to complete start to finish. The speedup comes from "builds" — ready-to-use development environments that Cursor prepares continuously in the background, at no extra cost to the user.

What exactly is a "cloud agent"?

A local coding agent runs on your machine and uses your files. A cloud agent runs on the provider's servers, which means it can keep working while your laptop is closed and several can run in parallel. The catch has always been startup time: before it can do anything it must fetch the repository, install dependencies, and build the project — often several minutes of pure overhead for a task that might itself take two. Cursor's fix is to keep warm, pre-built environments waiting, so the agent starts working on arrival.

Why is this worth noticing?

  1. Startup latency is what stops people delegating small tasks to cloud agents — if setup costs three minutes, you do the two-minute job yourself. Removing that overhead changes which work is worth delegating.
  2. Cursor explicitly frames this as enabling long-running autonomous tasks, which is the same direction as its Firetiger acquisition the same day: agents that own a piece of work from start to production.
  3. Providing continuously-prepared environments at no additional cost is a real infrastructure commitment, and a hard thing for smaller competitors to match.
