DeepMind WeatherNext: state-of-the-art cyclone forecasting, in Nature

What's this about?

DeepMind published (in Nature) an AI weather model, WeatherNext, that forecasts a tropical cyclone's track and intensity more accurately than prior methods — extra lead time that can help evacuations and save lives.

What exactly is "AI weather forecasting"?

Traditional forecasts run massive physics simulations of the atmosphere on supercomputers. AI models instead learn patterns from decades of weather data and can produce competitive or better forecasts far faster and cheaper — a shift that's been reshaping the field over the past couple of years.

Why it matters

Cyclone track/intensity is one of the highest-stakes forecasting problems, and peer-reviewed SOTA in Nature is a credible, applied win for AI-for-science.
