Agent Plugins: build a plugin once, run it in every agent

What's this about?

A group of the biggest AI-coding vendors — OpenAI, Vercel, Cursor, GitHub, VS Code and AWS — jointly announced "Agent Plugins," a shared file format for extending AI agents. One plugin bundles both "Agent Skills" and "MCP servers," and the same plugin is meant to work in any agent client that supports the standard.

What exactly is "MCP" / "an agent standard"?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a common way to plug tools and data sources into an AI model — like USB for AI, so a model can talk to your files, your database, or an API without custom glue for each app. Until now every agent (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot…) had its own way to add skills and tools, so builders re-packaged the same thing for each. Agent Plugins is an attempt to agree on one plug shape so a single package works everywhere.

What's the community saying?

5.5k + 1.2k + 1.4k likes across the launch posts; multiple vendors posting the same day.
  1. The headline is the coalition, not the tech: rivals agreeing on one format is what makes people think it might stick.
  2. Skepticism about "open standards" driven by one big player — is it truly neutral governance or OpenAI's format with co-signers?
  3. Builders welcoming the end of re-packaging skills/MCP servers per-tool, if adoption is real.
