simonw rebuilds a 4-year-old AI game jam for real

What's this about?

Four years ago to the day, Simon Willison tweeted about using GPT-3 and DALL·E to generate descriptions and concept art for imaginary computer games. This morning he had Fable build one of those games for real — using the four-year-old AI-generated images as the spec.

What exactly is notable about the "spec"?

He fed the model its own ancestors' output — 2022-era AI concept art — as the design brief, and a 2026 model turned that mockup into a working game. It's a neat before/after: what was a fun impossible prototype in 2022 is a one-morning build in 2026.

Why does it matter?

156 likes. A concrete four-year progress marker from the same person running the same experiment — the kind of longitudinal datapoint that's more convincing than any benchmark about how far end-to-end generation has come.
