What's this about?
Tokyo-based Sakana AI (led by David Ha) updated its large language model "Namazu" and opened it up as a public API — its move from research lab toward a commercial platform for Japanese-language AI.
What exactly is Sakana AI?
Sakana is the Japanese lab co-founded by former Google researchers, famous for nature-inspired approaches (the name means "fish") like evolutionary model merging and the "AI Scientist" project. Namazu (catfish) is its flagship LLM, tuned especially for Japanese. An API launch means developers can now build on it directly rather than reading papers about it.
Why it matters
Japan's strongest domestic lab going commercial matters for the sovereign-AI trend — countries increasingly want frontier-ish models trained for their own language and hosted under their own rules, and Sakana is Japan's flagship bet.
