What's this about?
OpenAI is giving scientists, mathematicians and engineers free access to its frontier models — starting with 10,000 researchers and expanding to 100,000 through 2027 — under a program called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, pitched as accelerating discovery.
What exactly is "frontier model access"?
"Frontier models" are the newest, most capable (and most expensive to run) models a lab has. Normally you pay per use. Giving them free to researchers lowers the cost barrier for people who might produce the most interesting results — and, cynically, seeds the tools into the labs and papers of the next generation.
Why it matters
It's both goodwill and distribution strategy: get the strongest models into the hands of the people whose output shapes the field, at a moment when startups are being criticized for *not* publishing research (see the Science story today).
