What's this about?
Sakana AI, the Japanese lab led by David Ha, signed the "Open Weights and American AI Leadership" letter — the same one NVIDIA endorsed. Ha framed it as conviction: open ecosystems are the foundation of a healthy AI industry and of technological sovereignty, and "collective intelligence is the future."
What exactly is at stake in "technological sovereignty"?
Sovereignty here means a country or company being able to run and control frontier AI without depending on a foreign vendor's API and terms. Open weights enable it — you can host the model yourself — which is why non-US labs especially champion them, and why the debate isn't purely US-vs-China.
Why does it matter?
It widens the open-weights coalition beyond US chipmakers to an international research lab, on the same day Kimi K3 (open) and Anthropic's position paper (skeptical) framed the two poles. The lineup on each side is becoming the real story.
