What's this about?
This paper argues that production AI agents fail less because they can't reason and more because they can't manage what's in their reasoning context — bloated conversation histories, huge prompts, sprawling tool definitions — and recasts memory and cost as lifecycle-and-architecture problems rather than afterthoughts (17 upvotes).
What exactly is "context management"?
An agent's "context" is everything it's currently holding in mind — the running conversation, instructions, tool descriptions. It has a hard size limit and every token costs money and attention. Context management is deciding what to keep, summarize, or drop, like a desk you must constantly tidy or you can't find anything on it.
Why does it matter?
It echoes this week's Claude Code system-prompt story from the other direction: the frontier of agent reliability is increasingly about disciplining context, not just scaling the model — cheaper, faster, and more robust when done right.
