What's this about?
Tokyo-based Sakana AI updated its Fugu orchestration model with Fugu-Cyber, which reaches state-of-the-art on real-world cybersecurity benchmarks — matching dedicated cyber frontier models like GPT-5.5-Cyber and Mythos Preview.
What exactly is an "orchestration model"?
Instead of one giant brain doing everything, an orchestration model is a conductor: it plans, delegates subtasks to other models/tools, and assembles the results. Fugu's bet is that a great conductor with good section players can match a soloist superstar — at far lower cost, and buildable outside the biggest US labs.
Why does it matter?
On the same day OpenAI's cyber-capable models made headlines for hacking Hugging Face, a Japanese lab showed frontier cyber capability is no longer exclusive to the top three US labs (2.0k likes). National-capability implications cut both ways: more defenders, more capable attackers.
