Claude Code now runs on Bun rewritten in Rust

What's this about?

Simon Willison verified that Claude Code — Anthropic's coding agent, installed on millions of machines — has quietly been running on the Rust rewrite of Bun since v2.1.181 (June 17). Two shell commands prove it: the binary contains "Bun v1.4.0" (a version that doesn't publicly exist yet) and 563 embedded `.rs` source filenames. Bun creator Jarred Sumner's summary of the switch: "startup got 10% faster on Linux but otherwise barely anyone noticed. Boring is good." The Rust version is now also installable via `bun upgrade --canary`.

What exactly is Bun?

Bun is a JavaScript runtime — the engine that executes JavaScript programs outside a browser, like Node.js but built for speed. Claude Code's interface is written in JavaScript/React, and Bun is what runs it; Anthropic acquired the Bun team earlier this year. Bun was originally written in the Zig programming language, and its team has been rewriting all of it in Rust — heavily using AI agents to do the rewriting. So this story is a snake eating its tail: an AI coding tool, running on a runtime that was itself largely rewritten by AI coding tools.

  1. "Why does a terminal app need React and a JS runtime at all?" — the top thread (30 replies) argues Anthropic buying a runtime to make its TUI faster says something unflattering about the original engineering choices.
  2. Transpile-quality complaints — people who read the generated Rust call it non-idiomatic, "an abomination"; defenders reply that the Zig version required manual work that Rust's compiler automates, which matters when non-deterministic agents write the code.
  3. Is this the proof AI rewrites work? — several commenters admit they thought a full AI-assisted rewrite of a production runtime would be a disaster, and shipping it silently to millions changes their priors.
  4. The FOSS angle — v1.4.0 existing only inside Claude Code before any public release reads to some as "the open-source project Bun quietly becoming an Anthropic internal component."
  5. Real-world segfault reports — anecdotes of Claude Code crashing in terminal tabs, with the irony that the crash-report link isn't clickable.
