Gemini desktop gets a Skills menu

What's this about?

App-teardown account testingcatalog found Google building a native Skills menu into Gemini's desktop app: upload, create, and edit Skills, point at local Skill folders, and use Gemini itself to write them — likely available across all chats.

What exactly are "Skills"?

A Skill is a folder of instructions (and optionally scripts) that teaches an AI assistant a repeatable task — "how we write release notes," "how to fill this report" — loaded on demand instead of pasted into every chat. Anthropic's Claude popularized the pattern; it's become the standard way to package procedural knowledge for AI. Google adopting the same concept (and word) shows it's consolidating into an industry convention.

What's the community saying?

147-like teardown + a pointed dotey rant (62 likes)
  1. Convergence — every major assistant is adopting the Skills pattern; portability of skills between vendors becomes the next question.
  2. Shipping-pace criticism — dotey: Gemini's web app "hasn't improved in a year," removed the Gems sidebar, and still lacks Skills while Codex ships several versions a day.
  3. Fingers crossed — even the leaker hedges that Google features spotted in teardowns don't always ship.
