What's this about?
Google renamed NotebookLM — its popular "chat with your documents" research tool, famous for generating podcast-style audio overviews — to Gemini Notebook, folding it into the Gemini brand family.
What exactly is NotebookLM?
It's a tool where you upload your own sources (PDFs, notes, links) and the AI answers questions grounded only in those sources, with citations back to the exact passage — unlike a normal chatbot that answers from its general training. Its viral feature turns your documents into a two-host podcast conversation. "LM" stood for "language model"; that awkward suffix is what the rebrand kills.

- The Google rename-then-kill pattern — top thread is gallows humor: products get endlessly repackaged and renamed, "some only to be killed later."
- Nostalgia for "Bard" — half-serious lament that Bard was a great name; "Banana Paper was on the shortlist" jokes.
- Monetization dread — predictions the beloved free tool will eventually "monetize every pixel into advertising placement."
- Alternatives question — a genuine sub-thread asking what else does source-grounded Q&A with accurate page/paragraph citations.
