What's this about?
SpectraReward is a training-free trick: to score how well a generated image matches its prompt, don't ask a judge model "is this good?" — instead measure how well a multimodal LLM can read the original prompt back from the image. That signal turns any pretrained MLLM into a reward model for image-generation RL. HF 44↑.
What exactly is a "reward model"?
When you improve a generator with reinforcement learning, something must score each attempt — the reward model. Building one usually means collecting human ratings and training a scorer. The elegance here: if the image truly depicts "a red fox on a snowy bridge," a vision-language model should be able to recover that description from pixels; reconstruction difficulty *is* the score. Zero training, no rating dataset.
Why is it worth noting?
Training-free reward signals remove the most expensive ingredient in RL fine-tuning pipelines — expect fast adoption in open image-gen projects.
